Typically paint used in bathrooms and kitchens are a semigloss paint or even high gloss. The reason being in a kitchen you are more likely to have to clean the walls more frequently and the semi gloss is easier to clean because of the shiny surface. In a bathroom where you have steam from showers, baths and splashing of water there too it is easier to clean up than a flat paint. Flat latex is fine in bedrooms living rooms halls etc. Remember when using a latex paint (water base) you can use a roller and where a brush is needed a nylon bristle brush is good. If you should use an oil base paint you need to use a natural bristle brush where you need to brush,( prevents lines in the paint from the bristles). Remove all switch plate covers and plug in covers and use masking tape where required.....good painting!!

"Pief..." had a very good answer...I just wanted to add 1 thing to it... DO NOT use oil based paint on a wall area!!! And it is NOT neccesary to use oil based paints on the trim in either room. A good 100% acrylic semi gloss will hold up just as good & it is water based...soap n water clean-up.
The difference between the paints is your basic paint is "flat" & not washable. Any kind of a paint with a "finish" (i.e., satin, eggshell, semi-gloss, etc...) is washable. Not to mention the 3-5.00 a gal in price difference!

Because those paints are high Gloss. High Gloss is easier to clean and is more durable.

The kitchen is a working place, You want lots of light so most people paint their kitchens white. But EVERYBODY paints with high gloss.
you can use semi gloss in the bathroom though. but don't use flat or eggshell there. some of those paints have mold inhibitors in them. this is especially good in the bathroom.

kitchen and bath paints are made to be more washable and mildew resistant than regular paint. the paint you have will probably work fine though.

The difference is that specialist kitchen and bathroom emulsions have more 'plasticiser' content. They are tougher (therefore more cleanable) and more steam resistant. But, once used, you cannot repaint with ordinary (water-based) emulsion - which will 'orange-peel'. (So test a small area with your chosen beige before lashing it on the whole kitchen...)

Ordinary paint (except gloss) should not be used in a place with high condensation as it will break down and crack and in severe cases it will not dry.
