I don't necessarily want to convert to any religion in particular. I rather enjoy picking at the spiritual buffet here and there and getting all the good bits from each. I am curious about the guys on tv who convert to islam and then go super radical and aledgedly go bomb places or sumthing like that. Is there like a step by to becoming a muslim for converters or do just have to start praying,dressing differently and grow a beard? Any insights into this would great.

All you need to do is say:
I testify that there is no God but Allah and Mohammad is His prophet.
People say this in arabic and english (if thats their mother tounge)
From the moment you say this, you are a Muslim.
You must then start reading up on the 5 basic pillars of Islam and use them in your daily life:
1. Shahadah.
2. Salat, 5 times a day (contact prayers-these are different from moments of inclination to God)
3. Zakat, this is the equivalent of tithe in Christianity. The amount differs.
4. Observing obligatory fast during Ramadan.
5. Hajj pilgramage once in your life, when you are able (both health and financial wise)
the number of people who convert and become bombers are low compared to the number of people who convert and live peaceful lives.

those guys on tv...... they aren't converting to the religion, they are identifying themselves with extremists and haters because of their own tendencies toward violence and extremism.
If you were truly interested in converting to Islam, you would first read the entire Qur'an and make sure it conforms to what you already feel in your heart. Islam is about following the word and the way of God. If this fits you, then you say shahada, which is the declaration of faith. You can do this either in a mosque, with other muslims, or alone between you and God. Shahada goes like this: "I testify that there is no God but God, and Muhammad is his messenger". It's that simple. You can follow your new faith quietly with no outward appearance of 'change' or you can dress diferently and grow a beard, attend mosque, etc. Your religion is between you and God, if you are sincere. there's plenty of info on the web, read it all, and take the 'bits' that fit. I personally recommend FreeMinds, because it is based on Qur'an, and NOT hadith.

The simplest conversion is in Islam: Just make two witnesses that you Believe in Allah as the Only God; and that you believe in Muhammad as the last Prophet who was a human. Then, you be your own teacher and take advices from the Quran. It shall suffice for salvation. Super radicalism and suicide bombings
may not be found in the Quran readings... These are political acts of the suppressed persons.

the fundamental belief is "believe that there is one god, Allah and no other gods, and believe that Mohammed is his messenger".. you are required to pray, .. dress, thats a matter of opinion.. You are required to dress modestly.. Doesnt matter what type of clothing.. just as long as it is a modest wear, applies to both men and women. Beards some feel is a tenant of Islam. I for one dont think so.. facial hair does nothing to say whats in your heart and belief.. .. As for the bombers.. there are always those in every faith that interpret things the way they want, they pull references from their religious books out of context to suit there own needs and how if effects them... and ignore the whole truth and message of peace and kindness to humanity.. If you have to go through any kind of ritual.Any kind.Then that should throw up a red flag immediately.You shouldn't have to do anything at all.You will never know Allah,but you can know Jesus.Jesus Christ is the truth and the life,and is the spring of living water.One touch from Jesus Christ and you will never be the same.

you have to tell people about your Islam and you can also go to a mosque and ask the person leading the prayer about what to do and say. you can also read books about islam. Beard is not necessary.
