Best for what? A water cooled AR10 is a waste of space and a 30" barrel won't do anything for the accuracy or range of the 300 RSAUM.

If you really want a sniper rifle then the sniper web sites seem to think the Accuracy International AWSM in 338 Lapua is the ultimate choice right now, the Royal Marines have gone over to that for their snipers. The 300 RSAUM isn't up to 300 WSM standards for power or availability and by modern standards isn't up to snuff for a sniper round either. But it is short enough to fit into a 308 action.

The AR-10 isn't a great 7.62, the Gene Stoner direct impingement gas system isn't a good choice for any battle rifle. The most successful 7.62 assault rifle is the FN-FAL, though I think the Sig 550 is more accurate and has a better trigger. The 7.62 Galil AR shares the same AK action as the Sig and my friend's sniper version was very accurate. None of those fill up the action with burnt powder and heat up the bolt.

I'd go with the Sig for a battle rifle, the AWSM for sniping and probably the Steyr AUG as an assault rifle, though I don't think the 5.56 round is adequate and neither do the guys in Iraq. Actually, I'm a big lad and if I had to carry a 5.56 into battle it would be an M249 SAW.

Mauser Model 1898 rifle.

The 98 Mauser set the standard for a bolt action rifle that is still little improved a century later. When it was introduced, it made every other rifle in the world obsolete. Also, the pointed projectile developed for this rifle was so ballistically superior to what was commonly used that it changed bullet design as well.

Used by the military of dozens of nations it also inspired numerous clones in other countries, including the Japanese Arisaka and the American Springfield 1903. A carbine version, the K98k, went on to become the German's WWII standard issue rifle and sniper rifle.

Mausers are the standard by which nearly every great bolt action rifle, even today, are compared and judged.

Husqvarna, Sako, Weatherby, Ruger, Remington and Winchester hunting rifles all incorporate many design elements of the 98, some so much that they are referred to as versions of it.

I also concur with the choice of the AK or Avtomat Kalashnikov, although the AK is really a carbine submachine gun and not truly a rifle. It does not fire a full powered rifle cartridge, does not have the range of a true rifle and a true rifle does not fire full auto. Even so, it was a revolutionary weapon that has over 100 million well used examples and versions in service around the world today. It is truly a wonder, so simple to operate and maintain that even illiterate, non-mechanical tribesmen from the hinterlands of the earth can use it effectively. Think about that when the new Congress tried to take away your right to defend yourself.

I'll say Avtomat Kalashnikova...model of 1947 more commonly known as AK-47 or Kalashnikov. Its the worlds most popular assult rifle. A weapon all fighters luv. An aligently simple 9-lb amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesnt break, jam or overheat. It will shoot weather its covered in mud or filled with sand. Is so easy even a child can use it.
The Soviets put the gun on a coin, Mozambique put it on their flag...
Its the best one i ever saw...

Marlin 30-30, because my dad bought it for me the first year I went deer hunting and it's served it's purpose well. But my Smith and Wesson .357 is my prettiest.
