It will take about three weeks and the older dog will then actually start protecting and teaching the puppy. Just be patient and when you love on the puppy, make sure you love your older dog just a bit longer and always after you love on the puppy. Give them both the same toys and play with them equally and give your older dog encouraging words....dogs are much more like young children than people imagine, so talk to them like you would a three year old boy. good luck and be patient, it'll work out.

DO NOT LEAVE THESE ANIMALS LOOSE TOGETHER UNATTENDED AT ANY TIME. You're asking to come home to a dead puppy with this situation.

First, you did not tell us how long you've had the dog or where you got the puppy, but regardless, these dogs should have been seperated for at least 2 weeks to be SURE the puppy didn't have diseases that could be transmitted to your older dog.

Next, you never EVER leave a new dog with an established dog unattended. What are you thinking?!! No no no, these animals need to be seperated when you are not in constant visual contact with them. Also, each dog should be dragging a lead (wearing a leash) everywhere they go, yard, house, car, wherever so you can break up the fight (and it's giong to happen, if not now then when your puppy is about 18 months) without getting hurt.

Boy oh boy you have a lot of reading to do. Go to this website: http://www.leerburg.com and listen to every podcast he has. If you can't do that, go to his question and answers page, it's filled with "oh they got along but one day....xxxx" it's horrifying.

Do some homework and prepare yourself to invest a lot of time in training these animals.

It's normal for your older dog to be a little jealous of the pup. Give your older dog just a little bit more attention than the pup to reassure him that he's still loved by you. It may take a while but he'll get used to the pup and before you know it they'll be playing together. I have to tell you this story. When I was younger I had a lab. My parents decided to get a kitten. The dog was so mad that when we would call her she would literally show us her butt! The kitten would go over to her and the dog would growl and get up and move but some time passed and the dog would go to the kitten and sniff him but if the dog saw us watching she would growl at the kitten then go lay down. We would laugh at her and she would give us the dirtiest look! It was too funny. Eventually they became best friends. All you have to do is give it time and they'll work it out on their own.

For the most part labs are usually not an aggressive dog. Your lab has had the home and surrounding area to himself for 3 years, it may take a while to adjust to pup. Introducing a new little fella can be very nerve wracking but I assure you that your lab is just trying to lay down the boundaries for the pup. Watch the lab closely. make sure his actions and intentions are positive towards the pup. I think they will be OK. Once they get more acquainted with each other they will be inseparable... Good luck

Treat them equal for starters, get them both a toy alike(stuff animal) and they will soon get along playin with the toy.
The older dog is obviously jealous, so when u rub the pup, u got to rub the older dog too.
They will eventually get along as long as they get equal treatment and love.
