I have always loved nuts (no jokes please). A couple of years ago i was due to sing at college and i'd been eating peanuts before and drinking water. whenever I spoke or sung my throat tickled like hell and I couldn;t stop coughing. It happened lots since but I never thought it could be the nuts. Just recently I've been having a bag of fruit and a hazelnut youghurt every morning at work, the irritation hasn't been that bad but just now i've been having this and have choked . I had to stop myself being sick as i'm at work and I couldn't catch my breath and lost all my food down the loo!!! Now my throat is sore but what if i'd just swallowed awkwardly? I can't tell...

any thoughts?

seems everyone agress that yes, you can definitely develop allergies later on in life. Actually, you often develop an allergy against something you regularly eat / have / do. It's your body telling you that it doesn't like that much of whatever you are doing to it. My sister just developed an allergy to something in wine and when she was tested was told that she has to stay away from wine for at least four weeks and then only gradually bring it back into her life.

I used to eat peanut butter( Ice Cream, PB cups,etc..) all the time, then this past Aug I experienced a burning in my mouth after only a tiny fingertip of PB,I called my allergist and they told me to stop and avoid anything related to PB. I was given a prescription for an Epipen and on Nov 13th I tested 3+ positive on a skin prick test after an earlier ( 9-15-06) RAST test was negative.I am 36 but have had allergies since mid 1990's. PB allergy was sudden. I also have Asthma which will also cause coughing fits too. I would seriously make an appointment with an allergist and get tested asap, the next time could be fatal.Avoid ALL NUTS and NUT containing foods until you know for sureand READ every label. http://www.nutnutrition.com/articles/nuts_allergies.htm is a good place to start or type in Peanut Allergies in the search bar. Hope this helps!!!

Just go get an allergy test? it may be nothing but is it really worth taking your life in your hands. I had an allergy to fish 20years ago for no apparent reason and spent four weeks on a very restricted diet, basically bread only and had food added over a period of time. A bloody nuisance but for the sake of my health it was worth it. Good health and best of luck.

Allergies come and go as they please - there are so many different strains, that even if you become immune to one, you can still get it again, however, it will more then likely be a different strain of it.

Your diet and health also affect what you become allergic to, aswell as improving your allergies.

I developed hayfever when I was 14 and I still have it now (many years on) - its the bain of my life, I wear contact lenses, as if I wear my glasses too much I the bridge of my nose gets sore, but in the summer I cant wear my contacts as my eyes water and sting and itch so much and are very uncomfortable. Every year I have to spend a small fortune on different types of antihistimines as I seem to become immune to the one I was using the previous year or Im suffering from a different strain of hayfever!!!!

It is definatley possible to develop an allergy later in life. My mum used to LOVE Brazil Nuts and suddenly reacted to them. She is now allergic to them, hazelnuts, almonds and a few other nuts. I suddenly reacted to eggs, I even have to carry anti-histamines in case I accidentally eat something with them in!!! It certainly sounds that you could have allergy to nuts. See your gp and ask for some allergy tests to be done.

You certainly can develop allergies later in life as my other half found out, he used to eat bananas all the time but had not had any for a while, when he did go to eat one he had a severe reaction to it, he now has to carry an epi pen.
