The signs which you refer too are there to inform the emergency service of what kind of load is being carried . so that if anything happens to the vehicle a proper response can be made to the situation..

To tell them what the lorry is carrying, if its hazardous and what chemicals it contains. If their is a incident fire crew know what to expect and what to use to contain the material inside.
