If you want a really moist cake you could either add applesauce or a pudding mixture but I add both. You should substitute the oil with the apple sauce and add the same flavor of the cake with an instant pudding mixture and your cake will be very moist and flavorful.

using applesauce instead of oil makes cake super moist but believe it or not my moistest cake is a lava cake that I do in the microwave in 10 minutes.
You need a Rice Cooker Plus for this recipe but so worth it
Molten Chocolate Lava Cake
One box of chocolate cake mix
ingredients to make the chocolate cake (from the back of the box)
One can of chocolate frosting
1.Empty cake mix and cake mix ingredients into Rice Cooker Plus and mix together.
2.Add ½ the can of frosting with Small Scoop.
3.Microwave for about 8-10 minutes or until a cake tester inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
You can use any kind of cake mix and frosting, but chocolate is my favorite!

I always add a small box of dry instant pudding to the cake mix. The same flavor of the cake mix. It always comes out nice and moist and yummy.

This is my mother's fool-proof recipe and always turns out moist!
1 1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 C. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
2 heaping Tbls. cocoa
1tblsp vinegar
6 tblsp vegetable oil
1 tsp. vanilla
1 C lukewarm water
(1 beaten egg, optional)
Sift dry ingredients together. (Mixing well). Add liquid ingredients and mix well. Place mixture in greases, square cake pan.
Bake at 350º for approx. 30 minutes.
It's that easy and absolutely delicious!!! (I know that the vinegar sounds strange, but together with the baking soda it acts as a rising agent)

Want something really strange? I used to put saurkraut in the cake batter. Just canned stuff, rinsed VERY well.....about a 1/3 to 1/2 cup. Works like applesauce, mayo, carrots, zucchini....all add moisture to cakes.

One way is to add a package of instant pudding mix when you mix up the cake. You can also replace any oil in the recipe with applesauce.
