Leg lifting is done to mark scent posts on a dog's territory so if he feels like there's no need to put up markers he won't lift.
It's linked to dominance too, because I've seen plenty of females do this as well.
Some dogs lift all the time, if they feel the need to show dominance, some only mark on new territory and around the border of their own, other more submissive dogs always squat.
It doesn't matter how he goes really. If he's comfortable squatting, he's probably just resigned to the fact that you decide where the property line ends, not him.

Males lift their leg to distribute urine for a marking. It is instinct to "mark" their territory. Dogs also send signals through urine and fesses deposits. With just one sniff a dog can tell alot about any other dog that has been in the area. Size, health, sex, readiness to breed and diet are just a few things. Believe it or not I heard it is learned by other males. Perhaps you need to have your dog around mature male dogs. Maybe he is too submissive? Maybe he was fixed before he realized he is a male? (just kidding)

that's an intuition. some youthful canines lack the actual coordination to do it because it demands stability. maximum men do ultimately do it, yet neutering as quickly because of the fact the vet says it relatively is high quality (often abt 6 mos) many times avoids the marking habit. they're going to lift a leg to urinate, yet they are not getting into marking each and every thing in the residing house.

Puppies do not lift there leg, neither do the old or sick. I doubt getting him fixed made him not do this. He may have arthritis or something going on with his back legs, or hips? Or he just doesn't want too lol!
I bet that is a funny site to see is your hubby trying to teach him! Funny mental image!

My pit was the same way, but now he's just over 3 years and lifts his leg every time. He'll probably come around, but you should definately get a pic or video of your hubby's education course!

Lifting the leg is a natural instinct in male dogs. The surgery afected his production of male hormones, so he probably lost that instinct...

My 3yo German shepherd lifts his leg only when he feels "manly"
other times he doesn't, if my son is out with him he will lift, only because my son will call him a sissy, dogs are so keen on human fellings, with me he knows it really doesn't maetter if he lifts or not as long as it's OUTSIDE.....LOL

It's pretty simple really, if you watch, you will notice that males pee infront of their back legs and females pee behind their back legs. Some males don't like getting their leg wet, while others don't care.
