Why is that? some people say you have to wait a year, others say you can't donate for life? and is the one year wait just for people with tatoos on their arms? and if you can give blood after having a tatoo why did my hospital refuse to accept me as a donor even though they tested me and they know that i don't have hepatitis, HIV, or any other transmittable disease, no anemia, or HPN or anything, i'm healthy, in my 20's, no vices, but i just have a tatoo and they still rejected me, why? oh and my tatoo is 10 years old

If your tattoo is ten years old you can give blood. you were probably rejected for something else. Ever been to Europe between 1980 and 1998? If you were Mad Cow could be a problem. 3rd world country any time? If you went to desert storm or OIF1 you can't give blood for 15 years, but if you went to OIF3 you can give blood after one year. Been outside the country in the past year? They can reject you for that. Did they prick your finger? Your iron could have been too low, blood pressure too high, heart rate too low. Any number of factors, but you can't be stopped for a tattoo, unless you got it withing 6 months or in a different country.

I don't know of any reason why you can't donate blood if you have a tatoo.
There is a danger of getting Hepatitis when you get a tatoo but if you have been tested and don't have it,then you should be able to donate blood.
There might be a waiting period following getting a tatoo so to give yourself a safe window before being allowed to give blood just incase hepatitis is a possibility.
Though our health appears to be good and we are disease free, there are other factors that play in when we want to donate blood.
Weight has alot to do with it. If you are underweight they will not take your blood.
If you are sick at the time you want to donate blood ie cold, just having recovered from the flu etc, they won't take your blood.
If you have just had a baby, they won't take your blood.
If you have just had surgery, they won't take blood.
If you are on certain medicines, they won't take your blood.
If you are a hemophylliac, they won't take your blood.

If you don't fit any of these catagories, then you might ask for the specific reason they won't take your blood.

You can't donate blood for a year after getting a tattoo or a piercing. I didn't know until I got my first one and then a few months later, there was a blood drive and I tried to donate. I was turned away for having a tattoo less than a year old.

Well that is partially true you can't give blood after a tattoo you have to wait 12 months before you can donate again. This guideline was set by the Red cross and is normally only enforced in states where tattoo facilities are not regulated. But in most cases no matter what they still make you wait 12 months. All of these guidelines are set to prevent concerns about the spread of hepatitis. In your case the hospital that you tried to donate to might just have their own theory about donating after getting a tattoo. They may just have it listed as a risky procedure and don't want to be responsible for any mishaps

Medically a 10 year old tatoo shouldn't present a problem. tatooing however has been a major method of spreading hepititus C and of course other blood borne diseases. So a waiting period of several months would be prudent as it would following any high risk behavior.

Well, we served in Europe in the 1980's, my wife and I. We came back here to the USA, met, and settled down, and tried to give blood.

No go. Might have possibly eaten a mad cow. Right.

In a Rations box, yeah... So we can't ever give blood, and may as well waste some money on a tribal band and a "tramp stamp"!

But, at least our reason has some validity and morality and integrity and some patriotism, and some honor, and duty...

We were both on active duty with the United States Air Force for over 20 years.

I'm a blood donor, and I have tattoos. I was told you have to wait just a year after a tattoo. I don't think that makes much sense since, like you said, they test your blood for everything, but that's what the blood service told me.

they want you to wait to make sure that you don't have any diseases like aids. Other than that you can donate blood with as many tattoo's as you want. They must be rejecting you for another reason. Did you ever ask them why?

It all depends on the bloodbank's rules. Everyplace I know of the rule is 1 yr for piercings & tattoos. Are you sure it was because of your tattoos? They don't get immediate results for all the diseases you mentioned, when they poke your ear or finger, it's to check your iron level. Low iron is really common reason to turn away a donor.
