He wanted those who persecuted him to be forgiven. They (we) didn't realize that Jesus really was the Son of God. May you be blessed with understanding. ~Nise~

first of all, i'm not a large fan of human sacrifice and blood ritual. although, in case you get resurrected, lack of life does not look like a lot of a sacrifice. I have too a lot self appreciate to provide my time and prefer to my "enemies". I fee love and am not only going to blindly supply it away. As for if I have lengthy handed through a similar issues Christ supposedly did, no I have not and not in any respect will. i imagine suicide is weak, blood ritual is perverted spirituality, and human sacrifice is immoral. when you're for them, it fairly is your difficulty, not mine. i understand soreness, i understand suffering. Do you? that's common to communicate about the way you would conflict through and how good things are once you're literally not suffering. I truthfully follow the gang, reason there are somewhat any Christians obtainable. And in case you enable your self to be killed, that's really on the point of suicide. reliable for you being a veteran, that is staggering. 1/2 my family individuals are veterans, from WWII earlier.

Because the world truly does not know what sin is.
1 Yahchanan (John)3:4—
Whoever commits sin, transgresses also the Law; for sin is the transgression of the Law.
The world doesn't know that they are living in sin, he died for our past sins and told us to sin no more, meaning learn how to keep the Laws of Yahweh found in the scriptures. The world is in darkness at this time, just like in the beginning.....
Prov 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light.
John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Does the world love the light (Laws) or rather darkness, ignoring the Laws?
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and DARKNESS was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of Yahweh moved upon the face of the waters.
Darkness according to Strong's Hebrew is word #2822 choshek kho-shek' from 2821; the dark; hence (literally) darkness; figuratively, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness:--dark(-ness), night, obscurity.
Come into the light Learn the Laws of Yahweh.

Let me answer this in a different way.
From the Jewish/Christian perspective:
Jesus died a Jew. He was not a christian. That is the truth.
When he said"Father forgivbe them for they know nothing what they do" meant is a simple straight forward answer. He knew violence of any kind against those who are doing is of no use. If they have to stop this, then forgive them. They do not know why they are doing it to him, because a few jews and romans are responsible, so if god punishes the rest of the population, it will will only lead to another tragedy.
If you look at it from the Islamic view, he would not have said this. He would have simply asked for revenge. I'm not joking. this would have happened. he would have asked god to write "peace" on his weapon and then kill those who crucified him.
Now if you move to HInduism/Jainish/Budhism you will have a different taste altogether. Their explanation would have been something like this:
These people are ignorants. if they think they are killing me, they are fools. they cannot kill me, weapons cannot kill me. i am not born, so i will not die. god please give them wisdom to know life. death does not exist, so how can they kill me. by killing my body, nothing happens. they merely taking away my clothes, thats all. give them wisdom and knowledge. help them become enlightened.
hope you will enjoy this explanation.
Aum, Shanti,Shanti,Shanti.

He was in part referring to the people responsible for his crucifixion.... perhaps..... since they were doing it out of fear of his having too much influence over certain groups...
But more importantly I am certain he was referring to his own followers, who rather than truly understanding what he was saying, started worshipping him personally as some sort of divine avatar... i.e. that they were committing the sin of idolatry...... In other words, he was apologising in advance for that which would eventually become christianity.
Jesus knew that he was not god... Whatever else he might have been, his dedication was to his god first and foremost... The idea that those who had sought to follow his wisdom instead ended up worshipping him personally was something he couldn't possibly be happy about, as an honest and devoted individual.

He was asking for forgiveness on their behalf because they obviously weren't going to repent because they didn't believe. However, ironically it shows that Jesus didn't know that they were doing God's work. Obviously God planned for this to happen to Jesus. Like the rest of the book, it's just a fairy tale that happened to have some correlation with actual historical events.
I think the more interesting thing Jesus said while on the cross was "Father, why have you forsaken me?" The other one is pretty straight forward. They both indicate that Jesus has some doubts in his last moments.

Jesus was asking God to forgive his killers because they didn't believe that He was the Messiah. This is the one rule I as a Christian believe to be the most important....forgiveness. Jesus taught us to forgive our enemies. It is difficult but if He could do it while hanging on the cross. I certainly can.

Specifically, Jesus was telling His Father to forgive those who were responsible for causing Him to be crucified. Taken generally, we may look at it as Jesus asking His Father to forgive all mankind for their sins for they know not what they do.

Inspite of all the miracles that Jesus performed right in front of their eyes, to show them that He was the son of God.... they choose not to believe Him. They crucified the son of God, and Jesus asked His Father to forgive them, for they know not what they do.
It also was the last thing that Jesus showed us Himself, that no matter what a person does to you, we are to forgive them for them sinning angainst us. If we cannot do this, then we are not to go to Him for forgivness of our sins against Him, until we are able to find forgivness in our own hearts towards another person.

He was looking down at the men who had brutally beaten and crucified Him. In a final attempt to show His compassion on a cruel, unbelieving world, He asked for mercy on those who would brutalize an innocent man.
He was also showing His followers thexample of how we were to treat people who hate us. "Love your enemies" he said.
That's why when believers revile unbelievers it is sin. We are supposed to represent our saviour, who "opened not his mouth", but willingly took upon Him the sacrifice for you and for me.

Those who crucified him did not realize who he was and what he had come here to do for all mankind. They were ignorant, and he had compassion on them, and asked his Father to forgive them because of this.
Killing the Son of God is a biiiig deal, but Christ knew they did not comprehend their actions or understand that he was, in fact, the Son of God.
