Depends on which religion you are talking about, my dear. There are only some 20 or 30 different religious practices in the world, with over 1,000 sects. You'll have to be more specific.
However, the basic goal of almost every religion is an effort to become closer to the divine.

Every religion has something you must do to attain it's idea of heaven. For instance, the Roman Catholics believe in Heaven as described in the Bible, but the Hindu's idea of heaven is that you are eventually reincarnated until you become a god, and the Mormon's idea of heaven is some promiscuous place of eternal sexual fantasies (for the guys, anyway).
This is where the Bible's teachings differ from religious teachings. Every religion, Catholicism, Islam, etc, teaches you must do something to get to heaven, whether it's being baptized, following sacraments, doing good works, making pilgrimages, etc. But the Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven and nothing you can do will get you there; only accepting the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. That is why I believe in Christ, not sacraments or traditions.
