You need (and use) a tie on those more formal occasions that require it. These would include weddings, funerals, award ceremonies, formal dinners, etc. - depending on how directly involved you are in the proceedings.

For example, if you are getting an award and will be in the paper, wouldn't you want to look your best?

If you are worried about this, just keep 2 or 3 plain ties in say, black, red and tan, and a few dress shirts, so that you are covered for most occasions.

Good luck!

You may wear a tie anyplace where dress pants and dress shirt are worn. There are still some restaurants that require a man to wear a tie. Some places you might be employed, such as a school or bank may have a dress code that includes a shirt and tie. When in doubt...ASK

I think wearing ties to school is ridiculous myself . Let a kid be a kid I can't imagine a kid wearing a tie on the playground or even to a school around here.
