So I'm taking a very long car ride with kids and was considering the dual screen dvd player for the car. Then I was thinking I should get a single portable to take with me other places. Any ideas on it? Which would be a better investment. Most singles I've seen are almost as much as the dual screen.

Opt for what best suites your needs, most cheaper dual screens are somewhat unreliable, I found Panasonic and Samsung models are quite good.
If you go for a laptop, make sure you go for a functional one, ultraslims are out. The best option would be a Toshiba Quosimo or Dell XPS but the prices are hardly justified. A last gen Toshiba Satellite media laptop would be acceptable if the price fits.

Actually the best option here is laptop. There are so many more uses for a laptop and the screen is much bigger than most portable DVD players. You can get a brand new laptop from dell for only 500 dollars and can get them far cheaper on ebay. I would recommend a IBM thinkpad since they are tough laptops esspecially on the road. Then I would purchase a car jack so you can plug the laptop into you cigarette lighter which will cost you about 20 dollars or so. But if you really dont have an interest in laptop and only want a DVD player go w/ the portable for sure.

sure, in accordance to the far's all transportable electronics except for those with an inner transmitter are licensed for use for the duration of flight. the ten,000 feet rule is because for the duration of climb and descent is even as the airways might want to be maximum likely to have a issue. Additionaly all the digital noise might want to doubtlessly intervene with the VOR device familiar on an IFR attitude. airways do have the potential to set their personal polocy's dealign with digital instruments, yet I have by no potential considered an airlien which prohibited using DVD gamers about 10,000 feet.
