There are at least thousands if not millions of people who are worshipped as gods. Think about every celebrity who gets worshipped by their fans. Nevermind all the local 'celebrities', whether it be a co-worker or a boss.

Add to this list Bhagwans of India. Swami Rajnesh was the recent God. He died less than 10 years ago, having lived in US with large following. The epitaph on his 'grave' in Pune India, reads: Never born, never died;visited the Earth from...to....(date). Then. I have seen the photo and read the sermons of a LadyGod of Japan, alive when I read her... . Quite a large group in Japan have the intense faith in their Emperor as the God. They ascribe many acts to him, some as Emperor, some as God.
In the list from India, given by Asker, the missing Gods are: Ram or Rama, Vishnu, Shiv, Brahma, Narayan. In India, Parmishwar and Parmatma are considerd to be Supreme Gods..but.. no Temple is dedicated to their worship anywhere in India. That is surprising.
The second part of the Question; What made them different? In India, no longer obeying the 4 Books of Vedas though held to be holy in belief.. because they teach monotheism... Indian Gods are all taken from Mythologies/Novels/Poetry... History and Archaeology has not proved the existence of any Rama yet the zealots are bent upon building a temple--Ram Mandir-- after shamefully demolishing a historical Muslim Masjid through mad, rioting crowds. There are several mythological tales on Rama (called Ramayana). In one account, Rama lived in what is now Baluchistan--Pakistan(where a Mandir is functional), not in Ayudhia town in Uttar Pardesh province of India, where the Masjid was demolished...by rowdy rogues.
In ancient history, all Pharaohs were Gods. Most Roman Emperors were deified as Gods.
Jesus is only one of the scores of Gods.
The answer to why? of the Asker; is the humans enchantment with Pantheism as a philosophy held dear as a religious truth.

Millions. At least is comforting to see that you guys in the US are in sync with your loathed counterparts in Iran. The two of you worship your leaders and life styles with such devotion that you don't even think of demoting them or downsizing your natural resources depleting ways of life.
