I too have been told that bananas ripen other fruit in the bowl quicker, and I think they really do...we always put our bananas at the side of our fruit bowl....Just in case!!

They give off ethylene gas that encourages other fruit to ripen more quickly, however this does make the life of the banana shorter so the other fruit will make the bananas go brown quicker. hmm, swings and roundabouts !!

I have heard that - but in my experience whenever I put bananas in with the other fruit - the bananas themselves tend to ripen quicker, the rest of the fruit stays ok.

Must just be my topsy-turvy world again!!

Yes. They give off a gas called ethylene. Therefore, you should keep then away from other fruit - unless you have some you want to ripen quicker, of course.

No. But bananas are very easily bruised so be careful how you position them in a fruit bowl with other more hard types of fruit for example apples or heaver fruit like oranges. If a banana gets bruised its more likely to get mouldy having a direct affect on the fruit around it.

Yes as they give off gases as they breakdown quicker than other pieces of fruit in the bowl. Fresh flowers in a vase will also affect the fruit and make it spoil faster and vice versa. Always try to keep out of direct sunlight and heat sources also.

I believe you can do it without any negative effects. Apples give off Ethylene gas (a ripening agent) which may cause the other apples nearby to ripen faster. I don't think it affects oranges as much. I always find that keeping apples in the refridgerator slows the release of the gas and minimizes the ripening effect of the Ethylene gas.

Yes they do but they also go black quicker if they are surrounded by other fruit, my tip is to keep them separate from all other fruit that way they themselves stay fresher longer!
