It depends entirely on the type of visa you use to come into the country. In some cases it is months, in others, years.

Depending on what category you are applying for, it can be a few months or up to 20 years for some people. Keep in mind that some people cannot get a green card no matter how long they wait because they don't have a citizen family member or an employer who will sponsor them. So, contrary to popular belief, there is no "line" for them to get into and they cannot "do it the legal way".
