Not obese, bone scan and x-rays show nothing abnormal except for the inflamation around the ankles.

I would suggest xrays and further exploration, it is often easy to just label pain as elements of ageing, but it could be very serious. A friend of my mothers had suffered like this with her toes, told the same thing ended up her toes had been broken. If you are not getting relief insist on a second opinion, further exploration and keep going until you find a solution....best wishes!

It's always OK to tell your doctor you need better pain relief. Tramadol, I believe, is another name for Ultram. Ultram is a non-narcotic drug that fools the brain into thinking it is a narcotic for about 4 hours. You can't get high from it, or addicted, and it is effective and cheap. Experimentally, doctors are injecting capsacin directly into joints. I've heard this is providing great relief to arthritis sufferers. See if you can get on a clinical trial somwhere. There are clinical trials all over the country, and most of them pay you to take part in them. Good luck! For my own joint pain I find a couple of beers helps. The problem with this is that alcohol is addicting, but a couple of beers a day is a very low amount and is probably safe for most people.

sounds like arthritis, and unfornately, many pain meds do not work for this disease, they tend to take the edge off the pain, but then as the disease progresses, you feel more and more pain, and it feels like the meds, work less and less. Sometimes too, the body builds a tolarence to meds, for whatever reason. About all you can do is to play with the meds, by changing, increasing, ect, with your doctors supervision of course.
Change of weather has a huge impact as well.

Without a medical history or other info (are you obese?)
it is hard to tell. Many people with chronic pain get good relief from taking monavie juice (info on request).
