My granda, who passed away sometime ago, had 2 tattoos one on each hand, I thought they where unique but have recently seen older men with the same tattoos.

They where swallows or some sort of bird 1 on each hand on the fleshy part between index finger and thumb.

Could any one tell me their meaning if there is one as this has puzzled me for years???

Was you're Grandad ever in the Navy?

There are a few versions- it was put on to show that you had successfully completed a certain number of/distance in voyages and also it was an old superstition to keep you safe and make sure you came home.

Hope that helps

Why don't you just get "Grandad" in a nice font with his dates on it. It's simple, nice and personal, every time you look at it, you'll remember him. It doesn't have to be an extravagant, clever, complicated tattoo. As long as it reminds you of him and you love it, then it will be special to you.

Swollows were originally tattood on sailors, 1 swollow showing they had traveled 500jk 2 for travelling 1000jk (usually there and back again).
It often signifies a journey if there not on a sailor.

They also became very popular after the 50's among reformed prisoners (who feel they had been 'there and back again')

I'm pretty sure they are navy/sea related. I've seen these before also, two swallows turned inwards. Sorry can't tell you anymore about it, perhaps there was only one tattoist in the navy?
