A sandwich would be supreme. But a loaf of simple french bread would do just as well, with or without butter.
Thick and chunky soups with potatoes or other root vegetables does not require additional fillers really.
A homemade minnestrone or chowder makes a great meal all by itself.

Any soup can be served as a main meal. I eat them as main meals all the time, provided that I boile pasta or rice on the side and serve the soup over the pasta or rice. This makes it filling. Also, you didn't mention meat, but chucks of beef or chicken really make a soup more like a meal. To go with it... serve with Bruscetta or bread and butter or dipping oil .

Personally, I would'nt think that carrot soup is hearty enough for a main meal. However, if the soup was minestrone, or gumbo, or seafood chowder, I think it would be enough for a main meal. Serve it with some nice crusty bread, and you're good to go.

Vegetable soup made with any kind of vegetables you like, Start
with a kettle of soup bones and some beef shank or pot roast.
Simmer with water to make a broth. Add a can of tomato soup
and all the veggies you want. Season with salt and pepper. Be sure to use a big dutch oven. Cover meat completely with water
to within a couple of inches of top. You can also use canned
beef broth to make it richer. Serve with bread for a wonderful meal.

Soup is usually served as a first course...not usually the main dish unless you have chicken or some type of meat in it ...if its think and hearty you can use it for a main meal. However, you can include crusty bread for dipping or even some type of panini sandwich to compliment the soup. Try Foodnetwork.com for some great meal ideas.

I make homemade soups quite often as a main meal. Serve with bread rolls, or bread. It is quite filling. Finish off with a nice dessert. Pie, cake, etc.

A nice salad with a good hearty type of bread would be great. I often have soup as a main meal. Chicken noodle, vegetable, potato and brocolli cheddar are soups I usually make. I thought my husband would protest, since he loves meat, but he likes it when I make soup. It is a nice meal.
