I am organising gifts for a colleague who is retiring. We have got the main gifts but got £10-15 over. Could get a bottle of fizz, but another suggestion is a map book. He is a keen walker/rambler, based in NW London. Any ideas for a good map book or book of walks?

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO WALK AROUND LONDON....IF YOU DO KEEP A TIGHT HOLD ON YOUR WALLET...NEVER WALK ALONE...DONT GO OUT AFTER DARK...BUT DO HAVE FUN

If you go onto the Ordnance Survey website at http://leisure.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/leisure/ItemDetails.jsp?item=os_osselect you can find a service called OSselect where you can make up a personalised map centred on your colleagues home or some other special location. It will cost £15.99 for a Landranger (1:50K scale) or £16.99 for an Explorer map (1:25K scale)

If it is just a map of London showing some rural paths then you can order free maps from

http://www.lcc.org.uk/index.asp?PageID=37

They cover all of London and surrounding areas and show routes in green which are picturesque and relatively traffic-free. They are obviously designed for cycles but would work just as well for walking as they show all the nice routes around the city.

Sorry I don't know about books but there is a website - have a look at http://www.walkit.com/ - you can plot your walking route from A to B, like you can with a car route on maporama or viamichelin, then print off the bits you want
