Because god's arrogance knows no bounds.... sorta like the rest of the big G-dude.
Afterall... the rules about turning the other cheek and not killing, etc etc etc ... were rules for us puny humans.... Not for the imaginary parental figure who ironically seems to be stuck in a permanent state of childishness (deliberately providing us with the oppurtunity to do certain things, then elating in punishing us for doing them)...
Clearly he didn't get that he was supposed to be setting an example until after the old testament... But then I suppose the blame falls upon christianity, because if Jesus was supposed to be the example we follow... theres been a bit of a mix-up... Afterall... christians spend their time in idolatry toward that Jesus fellow rather than following his admittedly sensible example (for the most part)...
Theism is just crazy from start to finish. Count me out.

We must take into consideration human condition when we consider higher or abstract realities in existence. We can assume that there is Justice in the universe independent of the existence of human beings, and that is beyond our full comprehension. We are therefore subjected to it. We can base our beliefs upon this premise. We know little therefore we should do little and even then very reservedly - that however true and powerful the full wisdom behind all creation both factual and eventual is not in our grasp. If we believe then we must understand that there is a reason behind all that happens to us, good or bad. Only then we can prefer not to act in vengeance, or react to what others do to us in equal and proportionate measures.
This is not a matter of inquiry of human mind. The concept is based entirely upon faith, and our need or natural preference to believe in things above and beyond the full grasp of our reason.
But could there be some humanly understandable wisdom in this? This could be viewed in ethical terms and reasoned as the highest standard of social living – a virtue. Is it practical? And can this eliminate the cycles of vengeful act and reprisals that people get themselves caught into. And when it is said that vengeance is the God’s prerogative, what does that mean? Does this mean that supreme forces, that we realise in our lives in only according to our capacity, will come into play to exact state of justice in the affairs of people?

If a human committed a crime against you or your family, is it up to you to make them pay for it? Would it be ok for you to go catch that person and lock them up somewhere for however long you wanted to?
Of course not, it would be taking the law into your own hands and we are to turn it over to legitimate law enforcement.
This is what happens when we seek revenge, We upsert GOD in His authority and sovernity and in essence tell GOD that we are able to handle things better then HE can.
Oh...when we forgive someone, we do not do it for them, we do it for us because not doing so will result in bitterness and that only hurts the one that is bitter.

Vengeance and Revenge belong to God ONLY.
^^
Thank you Mr. Happy Pants
Edit: When Jesus said turn the other cheek, he actually meant, shame your opponents with your reaction. As anger breeds anger..and most people would be ashamed if you asked them to keep hitting you once they hit you in anger.
Edit 2: Paradox makes an interesting point. If God and Jesus was the same, this would be a contradiction. This is another proof that they were different. Jesus was man, so he treated everyone like man, God was God.

The Path of the righteous man is beset on all sides, by the inequities of the selfish, and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed are those, who in the name of charity and justice, shepard the weak, through the valley of darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper, and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger, those, who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers! And you will know, my name is the LORD, when I lay my vengeance upon thee!

do unto others as you would have others do to you . love thy neighbor as thy self. we have to remember that the person that we are going to be seeking revenge on will return the favor back to you and you will do the same and at some point you will end up in jail or worse revenge will never satisfy your hunger but love will . compassion for that person will stop the circle of violence be for it goes to far .

Yes we are not to take revenge.God who knows all and sees all will in His own time judge the person correctly and punish him appropriately. We must trust that God knows best how to deal with the person who hurts us and save ourselves from doing wrong. For God sees the person's heart we do not.

I think the verse 'Vengeance is mine' is God saying that he, and only he has the right to judge mankind - we cannot judge each other as we are all flawed in some way - thus backing up the instruction to turn the other cheek

it is a shame, you obviously don't know the Lord. what do you think, that because you have done something wrong to another person the God will strick you down, that is not what that means, it is another form of love that God wants us to use. revenge, that God is talking about is, so they(the one who has harmed) will see the error of their ways,(to the one that they have hurt).......God bless
