My dog is a shih tzu, 11 months old and I have been advised not to have him neutered by a dog behavourist who believes that as he is a loveable, well tempered dog there was no reason to have him neutered until he is 3 years of age, hence avoiding medical problems in later life. He has also started weeing in our home and has on occasions weed in our friends homes where he has not done this previously. He has now on two occasions been playing with the children and then suddenly stops for no reason and gets a large erection and then releases sperm, this process takes approx 45 mins in which he is locked (to thin air!!!) and cannot move!!!. What do I do???????

Actually the sooner you get it done is better. He can acquire testicular cancer within three years. Cancer is not just in old animals. Just as it is getting young people in their prime. Cheryl crow and lance armstrong are in no way aged. They were in their prime just as a dog 2.5 to 3 is in its prime.

As for the erection my smallest dog that was altrered at 6 months had a big stuffed teddy bear he used. He still occassionally humps a foster pup.

The male will still have enough live sperm to father a litter of puppies up to 6 weeks after being neutered. You better keep them seperate while she's in heat to prevent an "oopsie" litter. BTW neutering is a generic term for desexing. It can be used for either gender.

Dogs have a accute sense of smell. If there is a female in heat within a mile of him, he can smell her. This is frustrating to him. It is better to wait until 2 yrs of age to neuter him, but if his behavior is getting out of hand, then have him neutered. The reason for waiting is, hormones play a part in long term growth and developement. Neutering cuts off all hormones. But many animals do live a long, healthy life when they are neutered earlier.

I dont agree with your behavouist. If you are not a breeder you should always neuter as soon as possible. There is probably a female in heat, she could be more than a mile away yet he still smells her. It should clear up but that will only be a temporary cure. Any time a female close to your home goes in heat he will do it again. He is just horny

It will be healthier for him to be neutered now and avoid months or years of that kind of stress. Which is exactly what is causing this release... a buildup of stress and sexual frustration.

I don't know why anyone would advise that you wait so long to have your dog neutered. The earlier he is neutered, the less his chances are of getting testicular cancer and developing such behavioral problems.

It looks like stress. Take your dog for serious walks several times a day and the problem should disappear. Let it run free. Good luck!

Get that dog of yours neutured----he's not weeing as you put it...he's marking his territory ------geez----NASTY -----

Medical problems....????? who on earth told you to wait 3 yrs!!!

That dog should've been altered at 6 months, if you have no intentions on breeding him.

Contact your vet---make and appointment and drop little ShihTzu off to have his cahonies cut off!
