I have a cat that is about a yr and a half old and yesterday when he was using the litter box I noticed some blood in his stool. We found a stray a few months ago and she had intestinal worms very badly that we had treated. I wonded if he could have possibly got them and if this is a sign that comes with it?

HI Cindy...gastrointestinal parasites can be passed from handling one cat then the other especially if one had been infected with the parasites. Hematochezia (bloody stools) can be indicative of gastrointestinal parasites where a fecal flotation exam can determine which that can be treated. Save and refridgerate the freshest specimen of feces in a plastic bag (date, time, name of cat and your last name) when you bring your cat to be examined.

Protozoal intestinal parasites such as Giardia commonly cause loose, gassy stool and abdominal cramping, especially in young kittens. Easily overlooked, Giardia infestations may need special stains in a professional veterinary laboratory for positive identification. Coccidia are tiny, single celled organisms common in stressed cats or those with improper diets. Causing loose, tan stools, coccidia can easily be seen on routine fecal exams and treatment generally will clear these opportunist organisms within a few days. Repeat uprisings of the organisms sometimes occur so treatment may need to be done for two weeks.

You should be treating your cat for worms even if the stray hadn't come into the house.

What was the stool like? Was it wet or was it very hard? Sometimes it can be caused from that. Keep an eye out but if you are ever unsure, always check with a vet.

Yes your kitty probably got them. Worms in any animal are able to be passed along to the other animals of the house or farm. Have a vet do a stool check and treat them both or you will have to do her again as well.

both cats need to be treated again for worms. Cats can pass them between one another. It can also be transported on your shoes, clothing or if you touched the stray you adopted and didn't wash your hands and then touched your house pet it would infect that kitty too.
