Next to the yellow star button for Favorites, there is a green +/yellow star button; click on this and you will get a drop down menu. Select import and export; a wizard starts up. Click next; from the menu select Export Favorites, click next. Select the Favorites source folder, click next. Specify a location to export the .htm file; the default is My Documents but you can choose the Desktop.

Goto :\Documents and Settings\........(User Name)\Favorites. Copy all the files in this directory and paste them in another location where you want to keep them as a backup. This is the only way to export favorites in IE (any version). However, you can import them from Firefox or Opera directly using their bookmark option.
