You can't get a cat to lose weight by decreasing its intake. Not unless you're feeding it huge amounts of food and then cut back to a reasonable amount.
It sounds like you're giving the cat kibble (dry food), and perhaps are keeping its bowl full at all times. If so, that's not good. You should set the total amount the cat should get for the day, and then split that into at least two feedings. If you're around, you can feed smaller portions more frequently.
You can look at the recommended portions for your cat based on its weight. I wouldn't recommend feeding it the recommended portion for its weight - cut it back a little.
But the very best thing you can do is switch it over to canned food. I have a 25 pounder who is now getting 1 5.5 oz can of high quality food per day. I'm also starting her on 250 mg of L-Carnitine. It's only been about a month, so I haven't seen weight loss yet but I'm quite hopeful.
If you're interested, I can post or email you links to some very good articles about nutrition and obesity.

Chanice: be sure to not leave food lying around as this contributes to obesity in cats. Cats should be fed a measured serving on a schedule. A vet should also help determine the proper weight your cat should be so you can slowly take the weight off. Doing it too quickly or starvation will force the cats' liver into shut down and would be fatal.

I once had a cat who was always hungry. He turned out to be diabetic. I didn't find out til he was about ten. there are feeding guidelines on the side of the cat food package. I only gave him dry c/d hills food. I think it was about a Cup and a quarter twice a day. If you have a Maine coon cat they are much bigger than regular cats about 25 lbs. My moms cat is always hungry he will head butt you so hard you will think somebody kicked you. She thinks he has Kitty Alzheimer's and cant remember if he ate or not. He is about 20 years old.

Cats eat when they're hungry; our vet said to leave out dry food all of the time, and give them a small can of food daily. Cats are like people, they come in different sizes.
