I always keep a little bottle of Anbesol around, it is a topic anesthetic containing lidocaine and is avaiable over the counter in the UK.

Applied with a finger tip or cotton wool bud, it can calm the most evil toothache down within about 20 seconds.

The only REAL limit is if you end up with an infection - it doesn't help too much there as it cannot "get to the source of the pain". For that, if you can safely take them, ibuprofen can help.

Sadly, there are only limited LONG term soloutions:

Dentist
DIY tooth removal
DIY tooth filling
Waiting until tooth nerve dies.

The first is the best if you can bring yourself to do it
The second is NOT a good plan - but folks DO do it sometimes
The third was done by me with araldite once - but you MUST make sure the hole being filled is INCREDIBLY clean - or you have dangerous infection trapped. You can also buy proper "temporary tooth fillings now" - if in the UK, see Boots - for emeergency dental travel kit
The last is where the root finally dies and typically the tooth then goes grey. It no longer hurts but looks grim and continues to rot inside your mouth. It isn't a charming plan - especially if you like the idea of kissing people...

So, you have a few choices but for immediate pain relief, Anbesol and ibuprofen. (assuming you have no allergies to either etc etc)

You can also try to gargle with warm water with salt at least once a day and Bactidol once a week (not everyday). Also, try to eat soft foods as much as possible. Avoid sweets too; and brush your teeth every meal. Just take really care of your teeth. But if the toothache's getting worse and is kinda serious, maybe you should really go to the dentsit. It's better then suffering from the pain for a long time plus it might be a symptom for something worse. Don't be afraid of the dentist. It'll pay-off.

Here are my tips for easing toothache pain

1) Use a wet tea bag, and place it on the sore tooth. This has helped me 9 times out of 10. Infact, I suppose you could keep a frozen tea bag in the freezer and use it on your tooth.

2) Garlic Cloves placed on the tooth has helped ease the pain.

3) Ginger Root - Shave a pisec of and place on tooth. I hear that it helps with the infection, and it eased my pain

I had a tooth ache from hell a few months ago. I called my mom and she suggested I rinse with warm water and salt to "cure" the infection if I had one. And take ibuprofen. The ibuprofen really really helped. I took 4 every 2 hours cause the pain was so bad. (I think the bottle says take1 every 6 hrs.) I was taking Advil before I asked mom and it did NOTHING for the pain.
Good luck. A tooth ache is a HORRIBLE thing :(

Try whiskey! It usually helps. I used it just before I got my wisdom teeth taken out. My teeth were so sore but it worked!
