No!
If you have dark brown hair and want your hairl to be the same color purple as the dye is in the tube, then use a creme-based developer and a powder bleach with a lot of lift!
Then bleach until your hair is light (lemon yellow to dark blonde, but the lighter it goes, the more vibrant the purple will be) rinse well, wash with a PH balanced shampoo DO NOT CONDITION, dry your hair and apply the dye.
Manic Panic and Jerome Russell's hair color product contain a mild conditoner. Let the dye sit as long as possible. Then rince till the water is mostly clear and use a thick conditioner like (Caballo de Cabellina, which, oddly enough you'll find in the pet supply area of your local walmart. It works great cuz it's all natural and super thick and creamy) Let this sit and dry on your hair til it's barely damp, then rince with cool to lukewarm water (it will keep your hair from getting overly dried from the bleach) and your hair should be ******* purple as purple can be!

Schwarzkopf LIVE have brought out some colours where you dont have to lighten your hair first, they do red, purple and blue. I've never tried them but they look like they really do work if the box is anything to go by cos all their models have black hair with the coloured streaks in.

If you want it to show up really purple then unfortunately you will have to lighten it first. If you just want to add a purple tint to your hair then most of them will do. Manic panic is bright, but washes out fairly quickly. Go to a sally beauty supply store and they'll help you.

I'm a hairdresser... go to a decent salon and tell them you want a violet red... they will be able to provide a professional job, with complete coverage.. pure violet is a lovely cover for dark brown hair.. I have just coloured a clients hair deep violet underneath with dark red brown over the top sections... looked lovely..

depends how purple you want it... if you'd be happy with a purple tint I recommend Schwarzkopf Live jobbies. If you want it to be a bright purple then you will have to lighten your hair... not necessarily bleach it...

for me it depends in the girl. Like I might notice a girl with black hair as well as think she is totally hot yet see a girl with blond curly hair that is meh and vice versa.
