I think the answer is NO!

It is just an excuse. All this rubbish about a genetic disposition = rubbish and I do not believe a word of it.

When I was a student, I used to drink every day. Now I drink twice a week. Am I an alcoholic? If I used to drink every day and I was alcoholic then why do I drink less now if I have a genetic disorder?

Is alcoholism a disease or an excuse?

I am in agreement with you. I used to drink every day, too. Now I don't drink at all and haven't for many years. I used to be involved the the 10 step program. I tried to embrace it but I could never quite believe that alcoholism was a disease. In fact, someone who killed a family drunk driving tried to claim that he shouldn't be held responsible for the crime because he had a DISEASE. The judge didn't buy that either. It's an addiction, no doubt, but a disease ....... I do doubt.

It is not the alcohol that is the problem or disease. It is the addictive personality that is the disease. I am what society would consider an alcoholic but I can live without the alcohol. I drink ocassionally but out of those occasions I don't drink in excess every time. I know people who drink everyday but don't drink to get drunk... one drink before bed or after work.... are they alcoholics?
Alcoholism is devestating to a family or a person's well being and quality of life. Surrounded by a family that is full of what society considers alcoholics is where I am at .... that is my life but it is also not every member of my family.
I believe that "alcoholism" is not the diseaseit is the personality of the person but society needs to place a title on everything.

Is depression not a disease? "Feeling down" does not equal depression...
Is it a disease to be afraid of spiders? When one can't leave one's house because of this fear, you probably would say yes.

There are difficult aspects of psychiatry. Most diseases (better say conditions) have a spectrum. You may be addicted to smoking, but if you can quit smoking, you will no longer be addicted. You could say being addicted is a disease, only if it effects your physical, mental or social well being negatively.
The same is true for alcohol-addiction. Severe alcoholics suffer from MANY physical and mental effects, which need treatment, so it is a disease. Some need assistance, treatment to quit drinking, so it is a disease.
On the other hand, most of us do their own bidding. There is no excuse for drinking and driving...
One other thing: genetic disposition is not a disease in itself; it means an increased risk of a disease. Nothing more...

It's not a disease. It's a personal failing. Those psychiatrists calling it a disease need to have their licenses revoked for incompetence.
