"It grieved him to think of that paltry, guarded, nut-like thing that was his artistic reputation"...what does "nut-like thing" mean in such a context?

It means his artistic reputation was considered crazy or mad and I suppose you could even go so far as to say it implies small and/or related to testicles(now the last is really stretching the imagination!)

A nut is hard to open, so in this case, it means that his reputation wasn't easily visible. It was hard to get to or "crack".
