How many people know the rules of stopping at stop signs? let's say a 4 way stop? How many of you follow the guy in front of you and then give dirty looks to the person who had the right of way? If you would please put the state you live in also. Curious about driving habits in each state

I think most people know the rules, they just don't care.Everyone seems to have the "me first" attitude.I live in Pa and most peoples driving skills are horrible,at least in my area. What is a stop sign or a red light?Seems they don't know.We have an access road leading into a Wal-mart shopping center here, with either 3 way or 4 way stops at each side road. Most people look before coming up to the sign and if they don't see anyone coming the other way, don't even bother to tap their brakes and make an effort to stop, just blow right through.I love when I get one of those idiots behind me on this road, because I make sure I do a complete stop and a very thorough look both ways before I pull away from the sign, then since I have to stop again a few yards down the road,I drive about 5 miles an hour till I get there.Really irritates them, but I am just following the rules...lol.Also people around here assume at a 4 way stop, that if they are making a right hand turn, they have the right of way regardless of who got to the intersection first.I've seen alot of near collisions in this case.People run the red lights and then give you the finger when you almost hit them.I blame the lack of drivers education in my area for alot of the problem. Our drivers ed was cut from the schools years ago to try to save money.Wasn't a very smart move I don't think.

Mags is, I'm sure, correct. However, I am familiar with the Highway Code in the UK and her statement regarding the rules i is not absolutely correct. If 4 cars arrive at 4 different stop signs at the same time then nobody would move. So, INVARIABLY we give way to the right....a little flexibility in the mix!

I'm such a pedant.

Don't get upset with others around you. They may have only just passed their test, made a mistake, be trying to annoy you for reasons known only to themselves, etc.

And Lucianna... quote "I can't tell you how many times I've almost been rear ended for following that law"...try using your mirrors, slowing down as you approach if vehicles are too close will help you avoid being rear-ended.

I don't know if a yellow light is the same as amber in the UK....amber means, "stop before the stop line if it is safe to do so". So approach speed should be regulated with regard to what's behind and in front; correct gear should be engaged. Acceleration is also a safety feature, as well as brakes and steering.

Depends. If at a four way stop. If I get there first, and someone goes. I try to go before they go. But I learned after awhile while driving. Wait five seconds. Then decide if there going or not. An if there is four people there. An they got there at the same time. I don't know. I let the person go to the right. An until it works it's way around to me. CT.

It's not really a 'state' thing, it's an 'individual' thing. I'm in the US and Missouri, by the way.
I stop at stop signs. Even if I'm the only one in the intersection, I stop because the sign tells me to.
I also will stop at a yellow light rather than try to run it. I can't tell you how many times I've almost been rear ended for following that law.
I yield right of way when I'm supposed to and some times when it's not on me to do it. But I'd rather do that than get into an accident.
I do have my pet peeves though. Like the person who thinks they can cut over three lanes of traffic to get off at the exit they're right on top of. I block this move if I can do it safely, and I do like the dirty looks I get and I have to laugh when they give me the finger.
Another is when people change lanes at a stop light and think they can and cut me off half a block later to make a right hand turn. Wrong!! I don't give them the chance. I pace their car and run right beside them until we pass the intersection.
Sitting in long lines of traffic at an off ramp waiting for my turn to go, and in the rear view mirrors I watch people pull out of the line hoping they can push their way back into it farther up. Not in front of my car they won't. If I have to ride an inch away from the car in front of me to stop the idiot, that's what I do. They were in the line and they had their chance, and they're not going to hog into my place where I've been sitting still for 15 minutes just like they have.
Other than those three cases, I pretty much let things go by me when I'm driving. Fairly passive while behind the wheel of 2,000 pound vehicle that I could turn into a rolling weapon and get revenge on the idiots but don't.

you must come to a complete stop at all stop signs, in Canada. Texas roll stops don't count, lol. Husband got nailed for this, he asked what a Texas roll stop was and the cop said what you just did, this ain't Texas, son. ok then.
At 4 ways, the first to hit the stop goes first, if there is more than one, the one on the right gets to go. If you can't figure out who is on the right, just wait for my hubby to yell out the window, "Go you moron.
I've seen people wait and wait and then everybody go at the same time, not pretty.

It happens to me commonly. I stop, the car on my right goes - and three or four others behind that one also try to go -- some appear to NOT care, others appear to not know the rules that they too should STOP in turn at the stop sigh (or flashing red light). I don't know if there is any solution short of more people getting stop sign violations by the traffic police.

you may stop. Walmart would not only make their personal indicators. those indicators are owned and enforced through the city or city. earlier Walmart opens their keep, they want to document place of work artwork and request those indicators from the city. So those indicators are authentic indicators and also you'll get a value ticket. you're honestly extra probable to get a value ticket at this variety of indicators because there are continually multiple persons contained in the parking lots. in case you've been going to really stop at one stop signal, i'd make constructive that I completely stopped at a stop verify in a crowded motor vehicle parking zone. now in case you really positioned a stop verify on your driveway, it does not be an authentic signal. in case you honestly had a real stop verify on your driveway, then it will be stolen and also you'd be charged with that.

The order is first to complete stop at sign should be first to proceed and then alternate accordingly as drivers stop at the sign. If you feel both of you arrived at the same time, why not give a hand gesture to allow them to proceed first?

If it says STOP, you gotta stop, but if it says YIELD you can keep going providing there is nothing coming from the right hand side, In the UK traffic on the right always have the right of way.
