I know everyone's going to shout at me, but if you want a perm, get one!

You don't have to do the 'rock chick' 80s thing, they are so many more styling options than that...and the solutions are much kinder now than they ever used to be. I have long hair-halfway down my back, had a perm about a year ago, then when I fancied a change had it permed straight again!

My hair condition since is absolutley fine-if anything it's got to be better than mixing between straightening irons, curling tongs and other extreme heat styling tools all the time.

Bottom line is talk to a hairdresser you trust (they should tell you the truth because they don't want you walking out of their salon looking like Michael Ball) and once you've considered all the options...DO WHAT YOU WANT, not what everyone else tells you to do! Hope it works out...

NEVER GET A PERM! It was a nightmare for me, I have shiny, moderately thick, very very straight dark brown hair, and my perm ruined my hair. It took 2 years and chopping it all off to get it back to normal. I also had to use all sorts of product for it as well, split ends galore, although it was quite sexy....consider the damage very carefully. Straight hair can be boring, but who knows, buy some new makeup, or clothing, hair takes a long time to grow back and once you screw it up there isn't much you can do. Also, untreated, natural hair is actually kind of uncommon, it will stand out because it will be so shiny and beautiful!

Your hair grows about 3 inches per year - with shoulder length hair, a perm is going to take about 4 years to totally grow out, and in between, it's a nightmare. A perm is for YEARS not just for Christmas! Buy yourself some decent tongs if you want curls.

If you have a perm and do not like it you are stuck with it. Try soft boho curls these are popular with long hair.

You could try a different version of your current hair style. For inspiration look in magazines to see what is out there to suit you and is manageable.

get Ur self some bendies or some heated curlers (hot sticks) they give an amazing effect!!! small sections spray with a heat activator and you will look fab ! i have poker straight hair, use to have perms all the time! at least you can have both with straight hair! not so easy to keep permed hair straight, even with irons just look at the damp weather we get!!!! xx

hard one .... i always regret having a perm if i ever have one .. they ruin your hair ... dry it out etc .... i also think permed hair is much harder to look after .... i wud recommend u experiment with hair curlers/tongs .... why not have a diff style cut in if your bored? once permed that's it .... your hair grows half an inch a month ... slightly faster in the summer months .. so after only 1 month u are gonna get flat roots .....

Don't get a perm, they're so 1980's!! Try curling your hair with tongues first. Or try wringlets. You can find out how to do them online at http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip7003.htm
