Hi Sandra,

If you've tried those rescue centres & the local paper doesn't have any adverts why not try visiting a couple of local petshops - they often have adverts in the windows ... as do local newsagents. It seems though that small puppies, even crossbreed or mongrel seem to be selling for a couple of hundred pounds ... though I did spot an advert for Jack Russells for a little less.

There are always lots of adverts in the Western Morning News - especially the Saturday edition.

Perhaps one of the breeders or advertisers that you've already been directed to will deliver the puppy to you ... some breeders like to do this as it helps to reassure them that the puppy they lovingly brought into the world is going to what seems like a good home.

You could always try advertising yourself online - somewhere like the Preloved.co.uk site or the plymouth.gumtree.com or pets4home.co.uk or adtrader.co.uk

Or maybe start looking for an older puppy or young dog in need of a good home.

Ever heard of puppy farms? Those places where there is mass, uncontrolled breeding of unscreened puppies that are removed from their mothers before they are ready? Who produce puppies with a lot of health/behavioural problems as a direct result of their breeding methods?

Your question must be an absolute dream for dealers that work for puppy farmers - and if you bought from them you'd be supporting that cruel trade.

Not that I'm saying you are a cruel person - I'm sure you'd be horrified by what goes on in those sorts of places. Just make sure you CHECK any breeders out THOROUGHLY before handing over any money.

PLEASE - take care when buying a pet. Get your dog from a RESPONSIBLE breeder. Unfortunately, the irresponsible ones (small or large scale) are usually the easiest ones to find.

(You say "cheap" but an irresponsibly bred dog with health problems will cost you more in vet bills in the long run)

First thing you should do is take advice from the kennel club as to how to select your breeder - they will also be able to advise you on what breeds would best suit you and your lifestyle. They will be able to advise you on what to look for in a breeder. See below for contact details:

The Kennel Club
1-5 Clarges Street
Piccadilly
London W1J 8AB
Telephone: 0870 606 6750
Fax: 020 7518 1058

Alternatively, why not visit a rescue? There's LOADS of dogs of all breeds and ages, that need new homes for all sorts of reasons. See the link below for a list of rescues near you:

http://www.dogpages.org.uk/sth-west.htm

Just scroll down to "Devon". There's a couple of rescues in Plymouth, so not far for you to travel.

Good Luck

P.S. A properly bred puppy or assessed dog from rescue is worth having.

If you are serious about getting a dog then go to your local animal shelter, though if you ask them for a cheap puppy I doubt very much if they will let you adopt one, as how on earth will you afford to keep one? You have to prove to them that you are financially secure.

A small bread puppy eh? Well, at least it wont poo on your floor, and if you get the munchies you can nibble its tail off.
Seriously, if you want a dog, go the the RSPCA, where dogs really do need good homes, and its cheaper.
