Will they give you time to work things out for a year before joining the Navy?

First and foremost just because you took the ASVAB doesn't mean you are committed to join any branch of the service. The first step in processing you is to see if you meet the elig. criteria i,e drugs, crimes, etc, etc.The second step in processing is the ASVAB to see if you are smart enough and what job your qualified for and want to do... the next step is passing the physical exam, the next finding a job in the Navy you can do and want to do, then you have to be sworn in to (DEP) and most likely you will go in delayed enlistment program until a seat opens up in technical school then they navy will give you an active duty date to be sworn into active duty then you ship out for basic training, from there to tech. school from there most likely a ship somewhere..Now that always was the procedure for processing a person into the military regardless of what branch one went in..Maybe now they are in such a hurry to get you in they just have you sign on the line and ship you..I doubt it though..also no guarantee you will get a ship right away either you could get an assignment on yard somewhere first..Good Luck Young Man..Proud to have you in the Military and all the good things you will do for this great Country...from a retired GI/recruiter..

My daughter talked to a Navy recruiter this past summer. Her plan was to go into the Navy Reserves until she finished four years of college and then go active duty with the Navy - if she decided that was still what she wanted to do at the end of her reserve duty. She would have gone into a delayed entry program until her summer break from school. Then she would have immediately gone to basic training and then immediately to "A" school to be trained in her selected job. After that, she would have gone back to school and served her "one weekend a month, two weeks a year". Many of her friends are on a delayed entry program. Our other daughter on the other hand, informed us she was signing up with the Coast Guard and - by her choice - was in basic training one month later. Our experience has been that the military will work with you to make sure it is a good match for both sides even though they will do everything in their power to get your name on the dotted line. Just don't sign until you are 100% sure. It can be a wonderful experience though very tough in the begining. Good Luck to you!!!!

Are you thinking about joining the military while there is a carnage going on in Iraq? Good luck, pal.

They will encourage you to ship asap. But, you can expect to head to a MEPS soon. As for how long they will let you idle around....hmm, i dunno.
