You don't say where you live, but my favorite place to buy cakes are Chinese or Asian bakeries. They're usually light sponge cakes with a not overly sweet whipped cream type filling. They come in many different varieties including fruit filled, chocolate, mocha, hazelnut, etc. I've bought them many times to serve my guests for special occasions and people rave about them. If you haven't been to an Asian bakery before check one out if you can. Their cakes are my favorite! (oh and I am not Asian, I just know an Asian cake would appeal to anyone!)

Patisserie Valerie in Old Compton Street, Soho or Kensington Church Street, London. Best cakes on the planet.

Get thee to Harrods foodhall or Selfridges foodhall (London or Birmingham). The cakes are fab. Otherwise most of the Tesco Finest and Sainsburys top range cakes are really good. Waitrose would be the best supermarket though xxx
