When I empty my recycle bin/trash, it makes a noise that sounds like paper being crumpled and thrown away. My friend has the same version of windows xp but we can't figure out how to make that alert sound appear on her desktop when she empties her trash. I tried looking un "control panel" and "display" but couldn't find the setting. Help?

By default the the sound associated when emptying the recycle bin is set. First make sure that your sound card is functioning properly. Checking the volume of your PC is the next step. It may be set to mute.
If the above things are okay then check the settings in "sounds and audio devices in control panel. In the sounds tab look for the program event "empty recycle bin" and make sure it is associated with the sound file -> Windows XP Recycle.wav

Click on Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds Tab (2nd one)

Now scroll way down to the Windows Explorer Events. There you will find "Empty Recycle Bin" and it should be set to "Windows XP Recycle.wav" If not then set it to that sound by clicking on Browse and then locating that sound.

Control panel ... sounds and audio devices .... then click 'sounds' on the popup menu you get. At the bottom you'll see all the sound files associated with your windows account and have the option to change them.

The recycle bin is placed interior the computing device itself or you could seek on administration panel. you will get the icon or you could merely seek on my computing device so as to get the recycle bin determination.
