A TJ is a Wrangler from the years 97 to 06.
A YJ is a Wrangler from the years 87 to 95
Before that there were overlapping years of CJ's.

The YJ is easy to spot. Look for rectangular headlights.
The TJ has round headlights and coil springs instead of flat leafs for suspension.

The YJ Jeep is a joke. It was supposed to replace the CJ series. It was comprised of un-tested parts and was not completely tested before it hit the market. It was AMC's last ditch effort to get people to buy the Jeep. Then Chrysler took over in 1987 and everything got better. Now, the TJ is better, but you can get a YJ pretty cheap and there are many companies out there that sell great parts and accessories for them. But I still prefer my pre 1987 CJ's and SJ's.

According to a web page Chrysler had a couple years ago. The Yj stands for "Yuppie Jeep" and the Tj stands for "Trail Jeep".

The YJ was AMC last effort to save her a$$, with the "HELP" from reanult. As of today is the best choice to modify because they're cheap. AKA as Barbie jeeps.
TJ is the model wich made the comeback for Chrysler.
Personally I stick with the older CJ family, at least the 7.
