I recently had a dental appointment and the dentist told me that I need braces that will last for 2-3 years. I am 19 and have never had braces and I want to know what they are like. Do they hurt really bad? I have been advised by many people to get the clear type. Is this good advice and why?

Oh, and how will the girls react? This consideration is paramount.

Oh and I heard that you can't eat solid food for a while after you get them on and shortly after they get adjusted, because it hurts too much. I understand you can only eat liquified food during that time, such as soup and baby food. I also am told that there are certain food which you can't eat all all with braces. Any of this true?

You can eat almost anything you want (except chewing candies that normally stick to your teet-like caramel). I'm 22 and got my braces a year ago, haven't had any problems---the only thing is the clear ones are a bit hard to keep clean. Especially if you like curries, coffee, cigarrettes...otherwise u should be fine. I'm at uni, nobody looks at me differently-and I seriously doubt it will affect your social life darling. It's worth the wait, and the only time it is a bit uncomfortable is when they tighten them (about every 6 weeks)-and soreness only lasts about 2 days. Go for it!!!

Get your teeth taken care of now! I got braces at 49 years old. My braces came off 2 weeks ago after 20 months of treatment. I had the traditional braces - brackets, wires, and rubber bands. Find an orthodontist that does not use metal bands. Schedule a consultation with an orthodontist; you will get all the info you need. The initial adjustment period after getting braces is the hardest part. Yes, you will have pain and discomfort. You will also have to learn to eat again - lol. I liked soft, cold foods like yogurt and ice cream when I had pain. You'll adjust very quickly and you will never regret that you got braces. Good luck.

They hurt when you first get them. They can hurt when they are adjusted. It stops hurting after a few hours. I would also suggest the clear ones. They aren't as noticeable as the silver ones. They didn't have them back when I had braces. They are worth it.

There are also braces that go on the back of the teeth and invisalign.

Yes it is good advice. Because if they are clear then they are not so prominent.
