They are really different. Irish has a softer brogue with a lilt at the end. Scottish accent is harder, clipped sounding.

Not even the Northern Irish accent is like the Scottish one, although there are similarities.
There are 4 different accent groups in Ireland, meeting somewhere around Athlone in the Midlands, the most audible difference even for foreigners is the one between Munster and Ulster. The Munster accent is sometimes mistaken for a Welsh one, although there are big differences as well.

I'm am obsessed with accents and I have a tone sensitive ear and I can hear even the slightest similarities in people's voices. If you want to truly compare Irish accents with Scottish there's a clear difference in Craig Ferguson (Scottish) and Collin Ferrel(Irish). The accents are similar but not the same.

I guess they are quite similar.... I have a friend whos irish & a friend whos scottish... To me, they sound completely different... but depending on where abouts they come from in the country probably effects the accent. I love it! its Almost as good as the aussie accent!

The accents in Ireland and Scotland are definately different even within different areas in the countries. I dated a northern irish guy and had no trouble understanding him.... then met three guys who lived 15 minutes from him and I didn't understand half of what they said!
