I can't wait to see Oscar thrash "Pretty Girl" Mayweather, but why isn't the fight any sooner like in Febuary or March? It's only November and if they fight in March that would still give them 4 or 5 months to train. I really don't think it needs a lot of hype or build up cause this is the fight everbody has been dying to see. So why don't they get it on sooner? Is De La Hoya still hurting from the Mayorga fight and needs more time to heal?

Way to be on the case dallygirl! I wonder if this is a ploy or is Floyd sr. behind this?

oops!, dallygirl made a mistake, that's all. happens to all of us. and u made one too BklynNYC cause i read on ESPN.com last night that Floyd Sr. has agreed to train Oscar. So relax man, this ain't life or death, it's just boxing!

BklynNYC, this little debate we're having is fun! I wanted to give u a chance to redeem yourself so i checked out the url you sent. Did you happen to check the time on it? It says 9:49 AM! I said i saw the article on ESPN.com last night which would make it after the url that u sent. I admit that i don't know how to send a url yet (hey, i'm new at this) but please go to ESPN.com and do what Cool Breeze said. See BklynNYC, now you're 0 for 2! Holla at cha girl! (Thank u Cool Breeze).

To Cool Breeze, you're right! I don't like Mayweather. In part cause he's has no respect for his opponents, he's arrogant and he hits women. I guess it runs in the family cause ol' uncle Roge is in jail for the very same thing. I hope Oscar beats some manners in him like Lewis did to Tyson. Did cha see how Mike acted after that butt whipping Lennox gave him? He was wiping Lewis' face and holding babies in the dressing room! Talk about being humbled? That's what Mayweather needs and will get on May 5th! Viva De La Hoya!!!!

2006-11-15 07:47:27 · update #4

And i have to add this, Mayweather can compare himself to Ali, Laila Ali! He does the same thing she does, brag and brag about being the best fighter in the world and then fights all the safest fights and won't go after the best out there. Give me a break! Those 2 should get married but they might duck each other at the altar.

In regards to your question, Floyd hasn't fought at 154lbs yet. This Mega-Fight for Oscar's Jr Middle Belt is his first dive into the pool. Needs time to put on weight and get some sparring in with 154lb partners. Again its gonna take a little time.

That's funny Vette. You call Mayweather pretty girl so i take it that you don't like Floyd. But i think that the fight is not until May is because it gives both fighters need ample time to heal from whatever injuries they suffered in their last fights (Floyd, his hand and Oscar, his shoulder from what i've heard) and there will probably a promotional tour and the longer fans have to wait, the more the fans will want to see it. Plus Roger Mayweather has to serve his time and Oscar made sure that the fight is on Cinco de mayo day. And to my man BklnNYC, she gotcha about Mayweather Sr. because i read the same article on espn.com yesterday also. Go to espn.com and click on "More" and then click on "boxing" and you'll see a picture of Floyd Sr. and the headline is "Buisness thicker than blood"? The article kinda reflects that Jr. and Sr. really don't like each other and that Sr. is actually happy to train Oscar to whip his son. Check it out!

A couple of reasons, one, obvious reason is to build the hype. The other, Oscar needs time. He's gonna be in trouble taking on a master like Floyd. The wieght (Mayweather's moving up) will not be as big of an issue as some may have you think. Floyd will still be quicker, and I have hard time envisioning De La Hoya getting to his body, or out boxing him. Mayweather will make it look easy.Although, I hope Oscar comes in ready and actually makes it interesting.

There are lots of reasons that the fight is scheduled for May. Many big events (i.e., events where lots of people are expected to attend or watch), take a year or longer to plan and execute. The location where the fight is taking place might have had other events already booked that prevented the De La Hoya-Mayweather event from being scheduled earlier. De La Hoya and/or Mayweather may have had other commitments, professional or personal, that made May the best time to hold the fight. You might be right that De La Hoya's injury from the Mayorga fight is a factor -- or not. If the fight is being broadcast, the producers would have to find the best airtime available, which may not have been until May. Perhaps May was when they expected to be able to attract the widest audience, or could get the airtime. And while it seems that promotional ads, etc. come together really fast, you might be surprised at how much preparation, scheduling, and time it takes to put some types of promotions together.

So, while I don't know the exact real reason that the fight is happening in May, there may be no single reason. It may be a combination of any or all of the reasons above -- or something else entirely. However, it isn't surprising. Talk to any Event Planner and they'll tell you that it takes a lot of work, coordination, and sometimes a lot of -advance- planning to make events happen.

I hope you enjoy the De La Hoya-Mayweather fight when it finally happens!

Lovely Lady Vette, you are pretty darn funny! I'm still laughing at some of your added details. Now if i can stop long enough to answer your question, i'll be ok! I think a lot of the answers you already recieved sums up most of the reasons so i'll just add this, i think Oscar is letting Floyd know who the boss is by saying you are fighting completely on my terms, and i'm not fighting until next May, so you can take it or leave it. And you have to come up and challenge me for my Jr. Middleweight title, i'm not coming down to welter and i'm not meeting you at a catch weight. And Floyd knows he had to accept all this if he wanted this fight. It's Oscar's way of saying to Floyd you might be pound for pound the best, but i'm still The Man! Keep up the humor, i think it's great! And don't be so sure about Oscar "thrashing" Mayweather, these are two of the best in boxing so i look for a great fight, but i do think Oscar is his biggest threat. Can't wait!

The fight just got signed Monday, a fight of this magnitude in the past has proven to take anywhere from 4 to 6 months before it comes off. The weight increase along with his hand injury is also going to take time.

Lovely Lady Vette - I look forward to reading more of your questions and answers. In my opinion there are a few reasons as to why they are fighting in May. Floyd could have indeed injured his right hand while fighting Baldomir. The holidays are coming up. It could be that both camps want to spend time with their families. Oscar doesn't fight regularly anymore, he may need more time to to get into condition and fighting trim. This must taken into consideration because of the fact that it will have been a year since Oscar fought. Also when does uncle Roger get out of the can? Floyd may want him there throughout the whole training camp. All of these answers of course are just speculation on my part. I'll tell you this Oscar, in my opinion, is setting this fight up the way he wants it. The way I see it that gives him a considerable advantage.

The longer you dangle this fight in front of the public the more money people will pay. Also, the more people will want to see it. It's like teasing a Lion that is caged up, when he gets his teeth on you, he will start eating at your toes first Smile....

Incredibly, I just read DeLaHoya doesn't want to fight Mayweather at all now. He's asked his manager to try to get Trinidad! WOW! See this:http://www.boxingscene.com/forums/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=95856
