I don't know for sure - but I think it's more likely a whale that has gotten its internal compass or guidance fouled up in some way. I seem to recall hearing that these beachings or strandings occur more when there is sunspot or geomagnetic activity that could cause issues with the earth's magnetic field (just a vague recollection - I can't give you a specific reference). It seems to me that *something* is wrong with their ability to find their way, in any case.

Oh, they are protesting pollution. You can tell because of the small placards they are holding with their fins.
