Bear in mind that the average farmer has devoted as much time to the study of his profession as any PhD candidate. Ask how they cope with erosion. Ask how they replace the nutrients in the soil so their soil does not wear out. Ask how they optimize production while minimizing erosion, water usage, and fertilizer.

Disabuse yourself of the notion or even the implication that the average farmer is rapacious and uncaring. Most people are quite happy to talk about how they make a living, and how they think they contribute to making the world a better place.

The farming practices per se , are tied to the availability and quality of labour , interpreted by the local Laws ,, influenced by the country's food safety and CODEX's.

The quality of services include the competance of the local machanic to repair and tune the ploughs.

Another example of services is seed quality ,, whereby the best governments imposes a Law on the suppliers ,, ELSE national agriculture can collapse ,, or never take off ,, as in every 3rd World country. Without stock and seed quality Laws , farming becomes a high risk gamble ,, that no real money want to go into.

So , you cannot have asked Africa to mechanise overnight without the White Man !! Not at the national level.

Corporates like Sime-Darby solve all these problems in-house and sperad their wings into Asia.

Sustainability is very low in priority in truth.
