retreat gives a sense of running away......to plunge also refers to seeking a hiding place from something so in the sense u are asking, I would have u say a bottomless pit would be an extremity so plunge goes with the urgency of your escape

I believe the term "bottomless pit" refers to a falling through space......

If an astronaut loses footing on the space station and floats away into the void, he may as well be floating into a bottomless pit.... ((I could be wrong))

just as it is that the lake of fire is the flow of an active volcano..... nothing can survive the lake of fire......
