Mostly it is because there are microscopic tears in your muscle...
And as they repair, that's how you build up the muscle.

Delayed onset muscle soreness is the pain or discomfort often felt 24 to 76 hours after exercising and subsides generally within 2 to 3 days. Once thought to be caused by lactic acid buildup, a more recent theory is that it is caused by tiny tears in the muscle fibres caused by eccentric contraction, or unaccustomed training levels. The reason for the demise of the lactic acid theory was that since lactic acid disperses fairly rapidly, it could not explain pain felt the next day.

go to any library and get a book on weight lifting they will tell you that you are ripping your existing muscle tissue and in the process growing more. your body does not like this and relases lactic acid which irritates the new gr4owing muscle. rest until the soreness goes away (about 3 days) then rip them apart again that is how to grow new muscle.

Because hard excercise causes ruptures in the tiny blood vessels and also small tearing in the muscle fibre, forcing expansion after a while.

it's good in a way... to a point

when you work out.. your tearing your muscles

you muscles then have to rebuild..... they rebuild stonger to compensate for the added stress

so you muscle hurt because you tearing and your healing/regrowth is muscle building..

result... bigger muscles..

but the essential .............you need to let you muscles heal otherwise it's counterproductive

Are you making sure to stretch before and after a workout? It's essential to prevent injury. Also, you might be working yourself too hard.

you streach them farther than at other times and you burn calories and there is waste material building up in the muscles during the process, that also makes you hurt. a hot shower often helps after exercise.
