I think everyone else has covered your question.
One piece of advice if you want to save a little more - DO NOT use the tuk-tuks! It may be a fun experience for foreigners but it will end up costing you double. You have to tell them where to go then you will need to negotiate a price - which , if you don't really know how much it should cost you - then they will ask for exorbitant price.
USE METERED TAXIS. They are air conditioned so you will be more comfortable. ALWAYS ask them to put on the meter - you will see the difference in price between taxis and tuk-tuks.

Tradition and Culture, just too many places to list but start off with the Grand Palace and Jim Thompson's House.
Bangkok has a full range of department stores, but try Home Mart first and then you have to go to Chatu Chak market open on Saturday's.
I would say there are more safe bars in Bangkok then in any other Capital City. Try these ones out......
Q Bar, Soi 11. All the bars up on Khao San Road Area. Hard Rock Cafe on Siam Square is worth a visit after 9pm. Its expensive but you'll only manage a few beers.
If you are open minded go to the bars around the top of Soi Nana and visit Soi Cowboy.

Hi, for some cultural and tradition, do a floating market visit at Damnoen Saduak with Aprime Rose Garden Cultural and Elephant show, complete with lunch. A full day program for you. The Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha Temple and Vimanek Mansion should be part of your visit too.
Shopping, besides Chatuchak weekend market, do head to Mahboon Khrong Centre too. Also Suan Lum night bazaar for bargains. And the night market along Silom and Sukhumvit roads.
Well, the pubs are not too expensive, so just go to any except those in Patpong, near Silom Road.

Hi,
If you have no lot of money , stay in the quarter of Banglampoo, Samsen road. You can see here in the soy 6 ,8 some guesthouse and hotel no very expansive and some time very cheap. Depend of your research..It's a popular quarter where you can eat in the streets all the time and you can see the living Thai people. You can go to the local of thai boxe (it's free and near) Really thai. many temples around and for yours purchases go to the Bobey market and the week end market, it's far but by bus it's very cheap.
So ask around for travel out of Bangkok and into Bangkok. Many travellers in this quarter too.
Good Discovery

1) Ayuthaya (the old capitol of Thailand-One hour from Bangkok)
2) Chatuchuk Weekend Market ( In Bangkok- has everything- from pets to furniture to clothes to souvenirs)
3) Most pubs/bars are safe. (I've never had a problem in any.)
But- if you need more info- check the address I've included. It's a great message board where many people can help you.

other than the well known tourist spots - Jim Thompson House is a nice cultural stop.. shopping might be best at small local markets outside of tourist areas and chatuchuk also known as jj market on weekends.. I have never felt insecure in any establishment in bkk - all are going to be safe as long as you don't get drunk and stupid..
enjoy your stay
