If you are training, you might want to stick with spirits since alcohol doesn't contain carbs unless it is a liqueur, like Kahlua or triple sec.
The calories in beer will be lower, depending on brand and type. Generally, the lowest cal beers are also low carb as well. If you are looking for a "regular" beer to have, Guinness stout is pretty low on the carbs but I am not sure how many cals are in that.
Check the labels if they have any..

If you are comparing serving to serving. One 12 oz. beer will have more calories than one shot of 1 1/4 oz unsweetened liquor. i.e. gin, rum, vodka, whiskey, brandy, tequila etc. But if you like sweet liquor like, Sambucca, Baileys, Amaretto, Southern Comfort, Peach Schnapp or the like, then it would be vice versa.
Also, most people take their liquor with some sort of mixer. If you like coke, tonic, 7up, fruit juice or sour mix, add calories to that because of the sugar content. What's your poison normally ?

Apart from everything else, beer actually has some vitamins and minerals... On the other hand, spirits won't give you a beer belly :)

It's the mixers that get you with spirits. Most have sugar.
