At our local grocery store, which is part of a national chain, I've noticed that for every popular product they carry, they have their own brand of this exact same product. The quality of these products are exceptional and with the exception of their cola, tastes exactly like the brand name.

I know a lot of corporations sell their products under another label.

What I'm wondering is would this be why all their products taste the same as the original, or would they have their own R&D and develop their own products that taste like the original?

Well, the generic brands simply copy a product that already works and market it under their own generic brand name.

The key is, the product is already available for public use and they are not creating an original idea. This means they don’t need their own R&D department or need to fund any such department. This allows them to under price these products and still have an end-product that is almost identical to the major brands (unless they cut even more corners to squeeze out a few extra pennies or the product has a secret recipe they can't duplicate... such as Coca Cola or Pepsi.)

On a side note, buying a store-brand or generic product means you’re not funding any research and development. In theory, if everyone purchased only these generic products, there would no longer be any new or improved products on the market. The major brands that produce and create the new products would either go out of business or have to remove the R&D aspect of their company, leaving only the products they would currently have to compete in the market.

I totally agree with RTEON!
Although I'm from a different country, it's the same.
You have your well known & expensive brands to hook the people who feel the need to buy 'up-market- products'.
Big corporations package their product under a cheaper brand name to catch the 'average' market.
The 'no-name' brands are often (but not always) from the same companies.

The reason for 'copy-cat' brands & flavours, is all about sales, piggy-backing, & revenue-generation.
If you love KFC for example, and were on a tight budget, would you buy a cheap chicken that didn't have the same taste? Or would you buy a mid-range priced chicken that almost tasted the same, but not quite?

It's a risk to develop & market something different in these well developed areas. Corporations like McDonald's & KFC are very quick to shut down new contenders in the game.

I do know that I worked at a meat packing co. in the Morrell slice bacon. We not only packed bacon with the John Morrell label but also packed the very same bacon with many different store labels. I always got a laugh out of it when someone would say they were buying bacon that was way better then Morrell bacon. Because I knew when they said what they were buying it was Morrell bacon. So, yes, it can very well be the same product as a well know corp. is putting out. They go to the corp. and say they will buy so much yearly but want there own label on it.

I've seen these stores having their own products as well. When I taste them, they are slightly lower quality than the original ones and they are slightly cheaper. I think they are making their own and simply calling it their brand.

The cannery in our town cans tomatoes for Contadina, they also can tomatoes for other labels. They are the same as the name brand so I am going to say they are the same only with a different label. My friends agree there is a chili cannery that sells brand names and generic brands, the recipe is the same for both.
