I work at a coffee shop and the manager decided to go there one day, drunk to get some cafeine in order to sober up, how ethical or professional is it for a manager to act like that in front of her employees?

It's unprofessional. She has no business being a "manager". However, unless she leverages it in some way, I do not know if it would be considered unethical. Unethical has very strict meaning in my industry.

If I were her boss I would fire her for being unprofessional, not for being unethical. Either way she'd be dunking fries at McDonalds.

It is not ethical at all for management to show up at there place of buisiness after/during when they have been drinking. It wouldn't be good for employee or customers to have to deal with a person in management who is drunk or under the influence of something. Since you stated you work at a coffee house, just a tip for you, caffeine doesn't sober you up, all you end up with is a wide awake drunk , nothing more. the only way to sober up is with time. If there is someone in a higher management position i personally would report it.

A manager is required to have a professional attitude at all times. It is not appropriate for them to come in drunk, whether they were on the clock or not.

I would contact your corporate office. You don't have to give your name, but if he/she is acting unprofessional, they need to know about it.

If a manager comes in drunk, she/he loses the respect of his/her employees. You should really do something about this. Any actions a manager takes, even when not working, reflects the company image and the corporate office will not like it at all. It's just not appropriate.

If this manager has no problem coming in to work drunk, what else is the manger doing that they think is okay? It's a big indication of other problelms. Report it!

I would call it totally unethical but not illegal, unless she was driving, nor grounds (no pun intended) for dismissal since the activity occured while the manager was off duty. If she worked for my company and I was her supervisor I would definitely have a conversation with her about the responsibilities of management and how one is required to present oneself in front of their employees. I would not be able to offer disciplinary action since it was off hours but I would keep a close eye on how her behavior effects her ability to manage the staff in the future. However, if there is any thing in the employee rules and regs that includes drinking or poor behavior at company functions that are not working hours there may be an opportunity for discipline.

I don't think that it's an ethical question, exactly, because she at least wasn't drunk while she was working. Nevertheless, I think it does give a bad impression to the employees. And I'd be worried if she drove there.

It is not ethical at all, but the reason I think so is because patrons in teh coffee shop can see her and if they are regulars they will notice shes drunk and they dont know if shes on her time off or not and will probably not think to highly of the place in the future if they think the manager is drunk on the job. Its not good for business.

It would depend on her behavior while drunk, if she was obnoxious and rude to you or others under her employ, then you have cause to complain. However if she was just there to sober up, and wasn't abusive then she was just showing her human side, which is a good thing. Actually something to admire because employers are not slave masters, or Military Officers. On that note the adage that familiarity breeds contempt is highly contested when your with intelligent and well adjusted employees. Be one.

Oooops she must have completely lost the plot ! Thats in very poor taste , and well i dont think she will be getting very much respect from her juniors from now onwards ... she must have some serious personal issues ...to have cut an act like that . Someone should talk to her about it perhaps another manager at the same level could do that ...

Are you sure she was drunk? Sometimes people have adverse effects from medicatins or situations like drops in their blood sugar that can make them seem intoxicated. That being said; some people simply cannot control their behaivor when they drink. Being drunk anywhere in public is disgusting, but this has to take the cake! I hope she did not drive herself there.
