YES, 3 times!!
it's worth it, just convince yourself that it won't last forever, and keep your eyes on the prize.

Yes, twice. The benefits are phenomenal: alert baby, alert mother, less recovery time (virtually nil), less "medical intervention" stuff to interfere with your first hours with baby. And more significant, statistical difference in c-section. I once read that if you get an epidural you double your changes of a c-section, especially if it's your first baby. But I only recommend medication free childbirth if (1) you are willing to be very proactive and assertive in your care and choice of childbirth practitioner (the practitioner has to know what they are doing and not put you in positions etc that cause more pain or tearing during birth), (2) you attend really good childbirth classes and with a caring coach and attentive coach (because you must learn the techniques to helpy you cope), (3) you are willing to practice (because the focusing concentration on something besides the pain is a skill), and then (4) you must be motivated to follow through. If you really want to consider it, then look into using a certified nurse midwife, because they have lots of training in "normal" delivery (actually more training than an OBGYN resident in healthy care, since OBGYN is in essence a surgical residency). Another thing though, is that it's a personal decision. Medications and csections are both safer now for both mother and baby than they used to be. Using pain meds or having a c-section is not a sign of failure! Some people need meds or need a c-sec, and they need to get them! I used meds with the 3d baby just because I hadn't coached, was very tired at the outset (labor was induced because I already hadn't been able to hold food on my stomach for 24 hrs and baby was lethargic), and just didn't cope with the pain so well. The epidural took awhile to wear off and my back was sore for awhile at the site of injection, but labor was much less challenging and intense as far as pain was concerned. I'd say a much more significant question to ask is, what is your doctor's c-section rate. They may not like to tell you, as there is wide variation and a lot of different excuses --- oops I mean reasons.

If your trying to decide... I suggest trying naturally without meds. I had an epidural and I regret every minute of it. I had trouble with the labor after receiving it and have back pain still, some people say its because of the epidural, but of course no one will admit it truly is.
Good Luck

Yes, and I didn't take any medication 'till the very end.. but I had a STUPID nurse who overdosed me on Pitocin (to stimulate contractions), so that I had NO BREAK in between contractions.
It was at that point that I finally gave in to everyone's pleas to let them stick the epidural in my spine.
That was my first baby. When my second was on his way, I asked for epidural soon as we reached the hospital (which they wouldn't give me until they had 2 big bags of water dripped into my veins intravenously).
Nothing but fun and games, I tell ya! ;)
