One of my professors told me that nothing really happens to those men because they never acted out on what they were I guess going to do and they never do jail time. If that is the case, then why do they make them seem like those men will get locked up for a long time?

There are many things they can and are charged with, depending on where they are arrested. The most common charge for a situation like that is called Solicition of a Minor for Illicit Purposes.

Any charges on top of that would depend on how much they did before showing up to the house. There could be Transmission of Obscene Matter to a Minor, Contributing to the Delinquency/Dependency of a Minor, Attempting Sexual Contact with a Child, etc. The names of these charges would change a little based on individual state laws. But just about anywhere, these are all felonies. If you get hit for just one of them, there is a chance the judge will be lenient. But the more of them you have, the longer the sentence will be.

It's possible that a really good, high-priced lawyer could get one or two of the charges reduced or dropped. But without the large amount of money that would require, there is a very real chance of a very long prison term.

And the whole setup really stinks.
They bust a guy then break to commercial to bust another guy.
It's that mix of law enforcement and entertainment.

"Cops" is the same thing?
I don't think so.
"Cops" just happens.

Dateline established a ruse.
And manipulated things and arranged meeting.
Who's the Dateline guy that appears when the target walks into the house?
Is he a law enforcement officer?
Then what is he doing brandishing chat room transcripts and eliciting incriminating statements from the target?
And, unknown to the target, the cops are waiting outside.
And the target is babbling.
While the cameras roll.
Anybody tell the target his legal rights?

I suspect some kind of deal must have been made in order to air the program.

These Guys were from all lines of work.
They all probably lost their jobs.
And a few of them got divorced.
And after you've been on Dateline on line predator episode you're probably gonna lose alot of friends.

But the setup stinks ...for prosecutorial purposes.
Good entertainment and sells advertising though.

Some of them have a record.

But with that kind of shock, I honestly don't care if nothing else happens to them. I assure you that they'll be very unsure about trying to pull the same crap again on another child over the Internet!

And those who saw them on TV, now branded them forever. So I think it is very good punishment

You can check NBC's Dateline web site for what happened to them. The journalist, Chris Hansen, though, should be ashamed of himself for doing this, unless he's not really a journalist. They're supposed to be objective and report the facts, not get involved in the actual story.

That's not true. When cops go undercover and pose as hookers, they don't actually have sex. The solicitation is enough for them to charge the guys with a crime. Same goes for the e-mail solicitations to have sex. In and of themselves, they are not inherently criminal, but when the guy shows up, that proves intent....

I think your professor is talking out of his butt, to be honest. These people have to be punished. Seriously, I would lock them up for life, or at least put a GPS ankle bracelet on them and monitor them for life.

No you can go to perverted-justice.com and see the convictions. Even just chatting with them with the intent to meet is solicitation and they are being arrested for that.

Your professor should educate himself on the issue before he runs his mouth about it.
