The surgery took place on my arm and the surgeon said what was taken out will be tested? So I am assuming that what he took out was okay and that it is over with, since he seemed confident. Has anyone ever had to go back for further surgery after surgeon said all was out?

Well, to start out, nobody can ever assure you that you are in the clear. Not even a doctor can assure you that. I'm not an oncologist, but my dad has been fighting a rare form of reoccurent melanoma for over a decade. He's had lots of "spots" removed, and they have had to go back in because they didn't go deep enough to get all of it. If my dad's statistics are any indication, they often do get it all the first time. However, you still need to be viligant in watching your skin because it can reoccur.

Best wishes for good health.

You may be all set for that particular spot on your arm, but even that is not guaranted.

Both my parents have melanoma. My father has had it off and on for the past ten years. Whenever he gets a lesion he just goes in and has it removed. He doesn't do anything else for it. He's retired and spends most of his time outdoors which is probably the reason he keeps getting melanoma.

My mother has a regularly occuring melanoma on her nose. Because of her age she did not want to have half her nose removed, so she elected to just have the cancer cells scrapped everytime they reoccur. It's worked for her for about five years.

So, you may need to remain vigilant for the rest of your life. Just keep an eye on it. You don't give your age, but I suspect that the treatment you chose would factor in your overall health and age.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your problem but you're not out of the woods yet. He sent that "sample" he took out of your arm to a lab where they will diagnose whether it is malignant (cancerous) or not. Even though he may have taken the whole mole, or spot, or lump out, until the lab test is back, he can't say for sure it's all gone....good luck...........

I'm sorry, but even though the doctor said you are okay does mean that you won't be in a couple of years. You will have to go into several check ups to see if you have any other type of cancer.

You said it was going to be biopsied (tested), until you hear the results you won't know if you are in the clear. but i wish you lots of luck. my step-father had it removed from his back 30 years ago...so yes, you could very well be in the clear.
